Piezo tip-tilt mechanisms provide fast motion along 2 rotation axes. When a mirror is integrated on top, we call them fast steering mirrors (FSM). They are used for pointing, scanning, or stabilization, in various applications such as laser communication, image stabilization and high-power lasers. Because they are based on piezo ceramic, they are very stiff and therefore they can move faster than magnetic fast-steering mirrors.
A strong advantage of piezo FSMs is that they can keep a position with virtually no power consumption. This makes them a very competitive solution for applications such as free-space optical communication, where power budget is limited.
